Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurpurab celebrates the birth of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev. It is also known as Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav and Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti. Guru Nanak is the founder of Sikhism and is highly revered by the Sikh community. The festival is celebrated on the day of Kartik Purnima.
Guru Nanak Jayanti symbolizes brotherhood, unity, kindness and harmony among the people.
The Pre Primary students of Ruby Park Public School celebrated Guru Nanak Jayanti by engaging themselves in different activities. Nursery students made “Chawar” with the help of cotton wicks, aluminium foil and straws.
“Flags” with orange coloured paper with the symbol of Sikhism pasted on it were presented by the students of LKG. UKG students decorated their scrapbooks by pasting the coloured “Symbol of Sikhism”. “Kripan” was made by the students of Standard One(Dagger).
The students were briefed about the teachings of Sikhism. The five sacred Sikh symbols are commonly known as Panj Kakars or the ‘Five K’s.
“We respect all religions. To spread this secularism among our students, we celebrate various religious occasions. On the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti , the students were enlightened about Guru Nanak ji and the moral values of Sikhism through a plethora of activities and story telling sessions. Our endeavour to make our future generation tolerant and respectful towards all religions will definitely be fruitful”, quoted Mrs. Joyeeta Majumder , Principal of Ruby Park Public School.
